Without getting hyperbolic, there are a lot of eyes on Double Fine and Xbox Game Studios: Psychonauts 2 is arguably the biggest game out this month, and Xbox's biggest game in quite some time. And, thankfully, we can report that it's been worth the wait. Again, it's been a while since the first game, so I've no doubt there'll be some people watching that aren't aware of what this game actually is. For those of you that did play the original, you know what to expect -- if you're unsure, you'll see it in our Psychonauts gameplay anyway. However, this plays far better than the first Psychonauts. Raz's jump doesn't feel as floaty, making the actual platforming more enjoyable. You'll still run into the occasional depth perception issue -- a problem with the genre -- but it's mostly a fun time. Likewise, Psychonauts 2 combat is way better now, too. Enemies have strengths and weaknesses, adding a layer of strategy to encounters. Sure, it gets a little fiddly swapping out your Pyrokinesis for your Psi Blast, or your Levitation for your Clairvoyance, when your in the heat of battle, but the addition of more tactical combat is great. Speaking of the Psychonauts 2 abilities, Double Fine has added a few for Raz to mess around with. We go into it in our Psychonauts 2 PC review chat, but the Time Bubble is a terrific inclusion that can be used for scraps and for platforming puzzles, and the Mental Connection adds another way to get around these levels. Actually, you'll hear us wax lyrical on the level design of Psychonauts 2 -- I mean, you can see how beautiful, wacky, and imaginative the levels are in the Psychonauts 2 PC gameplay. Every little detail in every single world is absolutely marvelous. Whether all these worlds stand up against some that are in the original is definitely up for debate, but that doesn't make them any less incredible. While you see expected wackiness on display in the worlds, the Psychonauts 2 story is a little more mature than the original. There are still some ludicrous characters, obviously, but each one of them is dealing with real world issues. This is a modern Psychonauts game with 2021 sensibilities, and it's all the better for it.
